Fun Fall Science Activities

Fall has officially arrived! Ever wonder why the leaves change in the fall or how glow sticks work? Today, I am sharing 3 easy fall science activities with you.

What is static electricity?

In the fall, the air in northern climates becomes colder and less humid/dryer. Cold air contains less moisture than warm air. You know this when your lips or skin feel dryer in the colder months.

The air all around us is composed of gases, one of which is water in the vapor (gas) form. In the cooler, less humid months less water vapor is present.

Find 2 easy static electricity activities here.

Why do leaves change color in the fall?

Leaves contain a compound called “chlorophyll.” Leaves actually contain different types of chlorophyll that cause the different colors. Leaves contain green chlorophyll, chlorophyll a which blue-green), and/or chlorophyll-b which is yellow-green. Leaves contain other molecules besides chlorophyll that cause the yellow, orange, red, an/or purple colors that we observe in the fall.

How do Glow Sticks Work?

When you crack the glow stick, you are actually breaking two small ampules (glass containers) inside the glow stick. There is a different chemical inside each ampule, and when you crack them, you are allowing the chemicals to mix and react.
